Possessive Adjectives: Expressing Ownership in English

.Possessive adjectives are an integral part of English grammar, allowing speakers to express ownership or association with nouns. These adjectives are placed before the noun they modify and correspond to the subject pronouns such as ‘I,’ ‘you,’ ‘he,’ ‘she,’ ‘it,’ ‘we,’ and ‘they.’

The List of Possessive Adjectives:

  • My (من)
  • Your (تو/شما)
  • His (او [for male])
  • Her (او [for female])
  • Its (آن [for non-living things/animals])
  • Our (ما)
  • Their (آن‌ها)

Usage in Sentences:

  1. My book is on the table. (کتاب من روی میز است.)
  2. Is this your pen? (آیا این خودکار تو/شما است؟)
  3. He can’t find his keys. (او نمی‌تواند کلیدهای خود را پیدا کند.)
  4. She left her phone at home. (او تلفن خود را در خانه جا گذاشت.)
  5. The cat licked its paws. (گربه پنجه‌های خود را لیسید.)
  6. We decorated our house for the party. (ما خانه خود را برای مهمانی تزئین کردیم.)
  7. They sold their car yesterday. (آن‌ها دیروز ماشین خود را فروختند.)

Important Note: The possessive adjective ‘its’ does not have an apostrophe. It is often confused with ‘it’s,’ which is a contraction for ‘it is’ or ‘it has.’ For example, “The bird has broken its wing,” not “The bird has broken it’s wing.”

Conclusion: Possessive adjectives are simple yet powerful tools in English that help clarify to whom or what something belongs. They are essential for effective communication and are one of the first grammatical concepts taught to English language learners.
